Field Technician & Claims Inspector

Master Tinkerers, DIY Enthusiasts & Detail Detectives Wanted!

Are you the person your friends and family call when something breaks because "you can fix just about anything"? Do you spend your weekends in the workshop restoring furniture, building projects, or taking things apart just to figure out how they work? Do you also have a sharp eye for detail, an investigative mind, and a knack for figuring out how something got damaged in the first place?

At Driftless Claims & Restoration, we’re seeking a unique Field Technician & Claims Inspector who treats every job site like a hands-on puzzle. In this role, you’ll serve as our eyes, ears, and primary craftsman in the field. One day you’re on-site assessing damage and meticulously documenting a claim; the next, you’re pulling out your toolkit, matching finishes, blending scratches, and saving a piece of furniture from the landfill.

If you live for grain filler, touch-up markers, upholstery tools, clear problem-solving, and bringing things back to life, bring your craftsmanship and curiosity to the DCR team.

What You’ll Be Doing:

1. On-Site Inspection & Investigation (The Eye)

  • Serve as Our On-Site Detective: Travel to homes and businesses across Wisconsin and into Iowa, Minnesota, and Northern Illinois to conduct thorough physical inspections of claimed items (furniture, fixtures, decor, and structural pieces).

  • Detailed Documentation: Capture high-resolution photos and videos, sketch diagrams, and write concise, factual descriptions of damage, manufacturer details, and overall condition.

  • Determine Cause & Origin: Use your technical know-how to differentiate between pre-existing wear and tear, transit damage, and handling issues.

  • Provide Objective Recommendations: Offer clear, unbiased recommendations to our claims team on whether items should be repaired, refinished, or replaced.

2. Hands-On Repair & Restoration (The Hands)

  • Furniture Restoration & Touch-Up: Patch, touch up, fill, and refinish nicks, gouges, scratches, and structural breaks on fine wood furniture and architectural woodwork.

  • Upholstery & Soft Goods Fixes: Perform seam re-stitching, fabric repairs, cushion adjustments, and spot repairs on upholstered pieces.

  • Fix-Anything Problem Solving: Apply your broad DIY toolkit—from minor hardware fixes to mechanical adjustments—to solve unexpected cosmetic or functional issues on-site.

3. Client Relations & Team Collaboration

  • Exceptional Customer Service: Be the friendly, professional face of DCR. Interact directly with clients, explaining findings and repair options clearly, tactfully, and empathetically.

  • Collaborative Reporting: Work closely with our internal operations team and partner networks to facilitate smooth, timely claims resolutions and repair workflows.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A True Maker & Tinkerer: Natural mechanical aptitude, curiosity about how things are built, and an obsession with fixing broken items.

  • Woodworking & Finishing Skills: Experience matching wood tones, working with burn-in resins/waxes, touch-up markers, stains, and various wood species or topcoats.

  • Upholstery Know-How: Comfort working with fabrics, foam, tack strips, and hand-stitching/sewing tools.

  • Meticulous Attention to Detail: An eagle eye for subtle damage, precise finish work, and thorough, clear record-keeping.

  • Tech-Savvy & Independent: Comfortable taking high-quality photos, navigating mobile reporting apps, and working independently in a fast-moving field environment.

  • Tact & Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive claims conversations with empathy, objectivity, and professionalism.

  • Physical & Mobility Requirements:

    • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

    • Reliable personal vehicle suitable for traveling to client job sites.

    • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and lift/move furniture pieces up to 25–50 lbs.

    • High school diploma or equivalent (vocational training, trade experience, or background in arts/craftsmanship is a strong plus).

    • Ability to pass a background check.

Why Join Driftless Claims & Restoration?

  • Competitive Compensation & Potential Equity: We value true craftsmanship and offer competitive pay, plus growth opportunities (including potential equity positions for key contributors as we expand).

  • Variety Every Day: Say goodbye to boring desk work. Every day brings a new venue, a unique project, and a fresh challenge for your skills.

  • A Supportive, Craft-Focused Culture: Work with a team that respects your skills, values your resourcefulness, and encourages continuous learning.
